Freight Data Visualization
I, like others on the TRB Visualization in Transportation Committee (ABJ95), were surprised to learn of the Challenge, but are nevertheless pleased at what you are sponsoring. We will be sure to announce the Challenge at the 2011 TRB International Symposium on Visualization in Transportation, to be held in Chicago, August 19-23, 2011 ( http://www.trbvis.org/SYMPOSIUM-2011/Overview.html ). We are particularly pleased as well to see the emphasis on 'data visualization,' an aspect of visualization to which we have dedicated several sessions and a workshop at the conference. Our interest in freight data visualization, per se, is grounded somewhat in the TRB Research Need Statement that can be accessed online at http://rns.trb.org/dproject.asp?n=23011 . ABJ95's interest in this topic was the result of interaction of ABJ95 with other TRB committees, including the freight data committee. In the past year, members of ABJ95 through a dialog with the SHRP2 C20 project (freight demand modeling innovations), have identified visualization as a core cross cutting technology within the SHRP2 C20 strategic research plan. The call for visualizatino research in this area highlights what is referred to outside transportation as 'visual analytics,' the notion on a more integrated and continuous involvement of visualization and analysis. I'll be giving a presentation at the symposium on data visualization and data analytics in the context of an anticipated regional freigh mobility plan in the Charlotte NC area. In the near future, I'll post that presentation on our institute's website so that students interested in the challenge might benefit from the thinking that has gone into the presentation. ITRE (the NCSU Institute for Transportation Research anda Education) has posted similar material in the recent past that can be accessed at: http://www.itre.ncsu.edu/VAMS/sim.html under the heading Conferences, Workshops, and Presentations. Following the Symposium, I'll post my presentation to this site. I encourage students looking for a data-rich area for their Challenge project to strongly consider freight data visualization. There is a clear need in this area and a strong national level priority for new thinking. I look forward to your entries. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in this area
